Why StumbleUpon is better than Digg to build your Blog Traffic
I got the feeling that StumbleUpon users are better than Digg users. Do you know why? They stay longer at your page and browse more pages.
Then I read three good blog posts on this topic Stumbleupon vs Digg – Voyeurs vs Sheep by Venture Skills, My StumbleUpon vs Digg Experience by Cucirca and then finally StumbleUpon Defined vs. Digg, Google, MySpace and More by SE journal.
I think StumbleUpon (SU) has a better model of user interaction that suits every user – you will be presented a web page on your browser – then you either rate with “I like it” or “I dont like it”. Very simple – users just have to stumble to the next site. Perfect for a lazy web browsers.
so, with SU – people see a story and evaluate.
When it comes to Digg – you will be presented with a link – with a Catchy title , then a small description, and user has to click on it to go to the web page. Big job for the lazy users.
with Digg, majority of the people see ‘who the Digger is’ and ‘digg it’ even without visiting the story page.
Now, I observed my blog stats over the last few months – how the digg and stumbleupon users behaved at my sites.
StumbleUpon (SU) is better, why is that?
1) Digg users always visit a page and then leave immediately. They do not subscribe to feeds, do not bother to see other blog posts. You may experience spikes in your visitor graph, but there will be no regular increase in traffic flow. Readers of SU have subscribed more times and stayed for longer times, read more stories in my websites.
2) For the newbies, Digg is hard to play. You may submit an article which might be stunning good – but don’t surprised if doesn’t get past 10 diggs. SU is very easy – a good post will guarantee a regular flow of visitors – year long – no catch involved.
3) Blog posts from blogspot.com, wordpress.com – do not generally make it to the Digg’s frontpage. Not only this, only the top digger’s stories (who have more friends) make it to the front page. SU readers don’t bother where the story is coming from, they look if the content is good – if it is, then they ‘give thumbs up’.
4) Sometimes, stupid stories make it to the Digg’s frontpage. But, with SU, the users do not simply put a vote for the sake of it (how stupid that would be?). If the readers dont like a page, they either say ‘ i dislike it’ or stumble next without saying anything.
5) Your server will not get choked up by SU users. Digg will do a considerable damage to your server (page not found), and your bandwidth – with not adding any regular traffic. SU is very smooth – as the day progresses, you will get a natural increase in the traffic – no sudden Digg spikes will occur.
6) People love surprises – what may come next. SU is highly addictive and very fast – SU users react very quick. With Digg, you see plenty of stories and choose one among them. In which format, do you think you will perform better? I will go with SU – where my post is judged individually as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ rather with a group of 20 upcoming stories in Digg.
If a blog post is good, SU users bookmark your blog as well (they go back to the root URL) and stumble it as well. SU readers have subscribed to my RSS many a times as I had previously mentioned. How many times that has happened with Digg users?
If you are interested in online learning then from different blogs and online articles you will come across different online websites which are offering online courses. Like mcdba Microsoft certified data base administrator will help you to enhance your data base skill. If you have any experience in internetwork then it is very easy for you to clear 640-863 online course. Cisco also provides many other courses online and another one is Voice over IP 642-432 course. This course will help you to give VOIP services to your clients in better way. One can also do online itil certification at very reasonable rates. The Microsoft certified systems administrator (mcsa course) certification will help you to make your career by ensuring that you have the skill to efficiently manage the Microsoft Windows OS. Microsoft offer different types of course related to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 like with the help of 70-293 courses you will be able to planning and maintaining a Microsoft windows server or with the help of 70-271 courses you can able to support end-users and troubleshooting a MS Windows OS. So there are many options that you can opt for but it is best to read blogs and reviews before going for any of these courses.

So true(I am a Stumbler).
I think you’re right. SU traffic is smoother yet very strong. But it won’t crash your blog. People visit more pages than Diggers.
On the other hand, Digg is a great exposure. When you’ve reached the home page, you’ll get 30 000 visits in a day and dozens of links from other blogs, because that’s where blogers get their infos..
SU users are not at all bloggers.
Cheers.
I love stumbleupon traffic – not only that – I love using it as a great way to bump into more blogs – like yours.
I agree that Stumbleupon is better than digg. I use SU a lot.

No comments yet but I find that those are some pretty good observations, I found this page using Stumble
I’ve just started using Stumble Upon and must admit, it’s great!
Why StumbleUpon is better than Digg to build your Blog Traffic? is not a question! Use proper grammar. I did not read you article specifically because you made such a stupid error in your title.
Too true
You forgot one thing, though… Well, forgot *mentioning* it, anyway. Stumblers generally give *lots* of love to articles that mention SU

I just found you thru StumbleUpon.
hi jfb,
you are right in a sense, i am talking about the repeat visitors.. digg is a way to build popular pages..but su is a way to build a popular blog!
hi matt,
yes, i have subscribed to many blogs after stumbling through them with SU.
hi anony,
thanks for pointing out – i know it is not a good question – i am working on my grammar – i am going to get help from an editor. I do not want to loose you.
regards..
I found your site through SU, but I still don’t understand how I can get SU to find my blog to drive traffic to my sites. How do I go about doing that?

i stumbled on this and totally agree – i think stumpleupon is a far more engaging tool… and generally when i stumbleupon something i like – i will check out a lot more of the site than just the one page – and often recommend further pages
I’m not a big fan of Digg at all. I’m definitely a Stumbler. I like the features you mentioned and I think you’re very right. If the page looks interesting to me, I’ll stay and look around, just as I have done with your site. It’s hard to judge a whole page and especially a site based on a title and a catch phrase. I’d rather take one glance at a page and then decide whether I want to continue reading it. Just wanted you to know I bookmarked your site and gave it my thumbs up.

hi don,
write few key articles first. then go to the URl of of your post (permalink) – then using your SU toolbar, hit the thumbs up icon ‘I like it’ – choose an appropriate category. thats it, Su users (interested in those category) will see your page. Email me if you need any more details.
thanks Sydney. I falling in love with SU every day.
I get to to read lots of interesting blogs from stumbleupon
I like Stumbleupon more then Digg
I adore stumble.
I agree SU is much more geared toward a lazy web browser who wants to be exposed to good content of interest. I find myself stumbling subjects for hours at times. SU is easily my most used addon to firefox.
Now let me go check out you other articles
I completely agree and I posted essentially this argument with a slight twist.
I called it Virtual Schrödinger’s Law.
You cannot both see the content and also see the content rating without the content rating affecting the content.
Here’s the post.
http://www.techrivet.com/2007/05/10/Digg+Is+Broken++Virtual+Shrodingers+Law.aspx
Which subsequently has been hit by stumble upon and driven thousands of visitors to my site on its own.
Stumble upon rules.
Another stumbler here!
I completely agree with your analysis. I have found many great writers, as well as others I visit on a regular basis for their humor, debating skills or beautiful pictures. I really enjoy being a member of SU, because I never would have discovered many of these sites otherwise. I also appreciate that we see sites based on our interests, which is a wonderful idea.
After reading this article, I, like some of the others, plan to read more of your writing, and have already given this page a thumbs up!
I think stumble upon is also much more friendly and a fun place to be.
Seems I just stumbled in here…

I like ‘em both, but StumbleUpon is slightly better. We once got 300 page views in one day with StumbleUpon, while our record with Digg is 250 (our site by the way is http://www.gigatribe.com – encrypted folder sharing between friends)
I am seeing nice waves of traffic thanks to StumbleUpon. Many of my visitors return on their own, helping me to build up my blog base.

SU rocks!!! (Got here via SU)
Oh, the irony, as I stumbled on this page I recognized myself in it … It’s all true
i love stumble upon. thats how i got here. i read your whole it caught my attention. i hate digg
Linking this story on http://www.bestofindya.com
I stumbled here as well – everything you said is true! LOL Nice work!
…Except that it is bad form to submit your own blog articles to SU and digg, as is the case here, in order to drive traffic (and profit from adsense.) It defeats the purpose of social bookmarking.
I agree Stumble Traffic is way better than Digg Traffic. My site has been dugg many times and the money I make off of ads never offsets the pain in the tookus it is to keep your site up.

I use Stumble as my basis of general web surfing when I’m not looking for anything in particular, because it often brings up a few items of interest that I probably wouldn’t have “searched for”. Plus a quick extra button press is easier than browsing though search engine results.
Can you buy shares in Stumble, because I wouldn’t be surprised if Google or Yahoo bought it soon !
(Let me know first and don’t tell anyone else just yet!)
Damn – I just published this anonymously
I just Stumbled upon this page
Very good points, totally agree
I stumbled here! SU is a fantastic way to quickly see sites that meet your criteria. Many of the sites I visit I never would have seen without this tool!
I’m not sure “lazy” is the right term to describe stumblers. I just like something that just “works”. I spend to long dealing with Microsoft errors to want to complicate my life any more. I’m not sure that clicking and typing any more makes you any less lazy anyway ; it’s only finger exercise and solving puzzles that shouldn’t exist/
you know, I founf this thru stumble upon and… I’m going to read more of your blog! *thumbsup*
Great post. You’ve been stumbled.
Stumble provides me with a consistent 10 hits per day (often spike much higher), and those folks will tend to look around a little bit…
Digg…. well, after I Dugg what I thought were my better articles after signing up, they banned me. So @#$% Digg….
“Why StumbleUpon is better than Digg to build your Blog Traffic”
I believe this is a statement and not a question. Perhaps annon should brush up on its English usage. If it was “Why is” that would be a question. Anon is simply a cowardly attention whore and any comment back simply pumps up their non-ego for another go round of their half brain as they try to prove their importance yet hide behind internet anonymity.
If you want to drive traffic to your blog using S/U – sign up, go to the page you want to promote and thumb it up. Now you have to hope that Stumblers who find your page will also thumb it up but beware because the thumb down can cause your page to be excluded from the random stumble – S/U works well because it doesn’t respond well to spammers. If the community doesn’t like a site it simply is ignored.
http://aldoushuxleyscat.stumbleupon.com/
You’ve also got to love the longevity of SU traffic…
here’s another new subscriber from SU!
true!
I don’t get stumbleupon. I signed up, stumbled one of my websites, made a friend, they gave me a thumbs up on my website and a review, I have been stumbling other people’s websites, but two weeks later, I haven’t even recieved one visitor to my website. How are all of you getting visitors? http://www.10thousandpeople.com.
It also must be considered that Digg users have an idea of what they are going to get when they click to go to your website. It is often blind luck with StumbleUpon.
