5 tips to avoid junk food

16 August 2008 One Comment

Man has a passion for food. Many tasty food items had been prepared by man over the years and there seems to be no end for his innovation. Junk food was one such item and the name ‘Junk food’ was for the first time coined by Michael Jacobson in the year 1972.

So, what are “junk foods”?
Junk foods are carbohydrate rich potato chips, candies, chocolates etc which have plenty of fat, Salt and sugar contents, rich in calories, but less in value in terms of nutrients. Since junk foods are tasty, attractive, very easy and cheap to manufacture, they are easily and readily available in markets. Though they are particularly attractive to children, they are harmful to health. They
cause lack of concentration, cholesterol, heart ailments, liver diseases and kidney failures etc in the human beings.

Therefore, we have to necessarily eschew from the junk food in the interests of our health. The following 5 tips will be useful to avoid junk food:-

1) Children are more attracted towards junk food. They should be specifically advised and guided to eschew from the junk food, since they grow in to and form the future generation.

2) Instead of providing potato chips which are rich in salt content and carbohydrate, we may make chips out of maize flour and supply them to children and these are readily available in plenty in grocery stores. These maize chips are less in carbohydrate and fat content and of course less in calorie content and comparatively cheaper also.

3) Nutritious foods should be made available during every meals time at the earliest point of time and people will naturally prefer them instead of junk food items. Junk food addicts can be gradually cured in this way.

4) Lack of awareness about the junk foods, make people crave for them blindly for their sheer taste. Hence, beginning from schools, a sustained campaign against the junk foods should be made to veer away the people from the junk foods.

5) It is always better to highlight the effects of junk food in each and every house in the form of a small board in which we can jot down about the health hazards we may face. It will help us to resist our temptation towards junk food at least at home, if not elsewhere.

Hi Thiru – I love the idea of that junk food board.

We eat fairly health in our house, but getting my eldest son to eat vegetables is difficult.
