Looking for a Keyboard shortcut to mute PC speaker volume?

Do you want to mute the volume or silence the PC speakers with a keyboard shortcut? This will help if you rely on PC speakers to listen to music. And, this would be really handy, if suddenly your boss barges into your office room without any notice.

Unfortunately, you can not set such a nice keyboard shortcut with Windows (if you know, let me hear it)

So, here is a work around. Download and install Sound Control a small freeware.

Start Sound Control.

Right-click on the Sound Control icon on your taskbar and choose "Options".

Look under the tab "Mixer and Hot Keys". You should see an option to set a shortcut to Mute.

I have set a Win + X (windows key + X) (I found it easy for me) for Mute. You can set a different combination with Ctrl , Alt or Win keys.

Test the Shortcut key. If you press the same shortcut, Mute will release and you will hear the sound.

You can set a shortcut to reduce or increase the volume.

How to download subtitles for any Movies and Videos: A simple starter guide

We often download videos (DVD-rips) from Torrents sites or a music video from Youtube. If they are from foreign langauges or if you want French / Spanish subtitles, here are the best solutions. This is a starter guide to get the subtitles for your favorite movies so you can watch movies or burn them later for use in DVD players. You can watch your downloaded movies with subititles regardless from where or when you downloaded them. Even better, you can burn a new DVD or video with added subtitles. Now, you can present Chinese films -with subtitles – as a present your grandma and granddad.

Step 1: Search and Download subtitles:
Visit any one of the sites and use your movie title (say, Harry Potter) as your keyword and execute search. Choose the appropriate movie, language for which you are seeking subtitles.

Download it and save it in the same folder where you have the movie files. Usually, the subtitle files are text files – but you may or may not be able to view them with a text editor.

Step 2: Use subtitles and enjoy the movie:
Now, if you a good video player such as VLC media player which is a free and open source media player, when you open a video file, you can also select the browse and select the downloaded subtitles file view the movie. If you can not do this, download VLC media player.

If you want to burn a DVD and permanently want to ‘etch your subtitles’ on your movie, then follow these steps.

Step 3: Use a Subtitling software to test drive your downlaoded subtitles:

You need to download a free software called “Subtitle Workshop” to check your subtitles and adjust the subtitles to start at the right moments. Follow this tutorial to correctly position the subtitles with the movie scenes. This should work for most of the cases, but if the subtitles are awfully placed at wrong intervals, search and download for another good quality subtitle file from another site.

Step 4: Burn the DVD/CD with subtitles:

Now, you need another set of freewares (I promise these are very useful, if you fall into a rhythm, you will master these) – downlaod VirtualDub or VobSub . Both will help to render the subtitles into the movie scenes and will give a single output file which is ready to be written into CD/DVD. Step 5: Ripping subtitles from a Original DVD:
In case if you like to rip-off a subtitle file from an original DVD, first rip-off using a DVD ripper software such as DVDShrink or DVD Decryptor. Both softwares are thankfully free and they would rip the entire DVD on to your hard-disk (4GB space needed for a DVD)

For ripping subtitles, download Subrip and point to the HardDisk folder where your DVD-ripped movie files reside. Thats it, now you will have a subtitle file on your drive which you can read with a text editor.

You woud’ve already heard about the Gmail drive.
I think gdisk is the same old service under a different name.
With a small utility installed, gdisk allows you to store your files online with your google account.
Very easy to upload and download as it functions in your PC as a realdrive.

update: Sorry, the gmail drive is different from gdiskand now it is available as xmail hard drive. Now, you can have two!

Are you fed-up with filesize limits on e-mail attachments?

Pando is free software that lets you send and receive files and folders of any size (up to 1 GB) with your existing email address.

It is very useful. Just download and run the program. You may drag and drop files or folders (yes folders also) and enter the recipient e-mail id. That’s it.

The receivers will receive a link and they need to install Pando from where they can download.

Everyday thousands and thousands of audio / video programs are being podcast (web equivalent of telecast!) over the web. You can listen / watch over your mobile devices or with your PC.

The trouble is you may be able to watch a podcast at odd-hours in the night (or day ..for me!) Want to listen to internet audio programs but can’t when they are scheduled?

Juice, a free (open-source) program allows you to ‘bookmark’ a podcast and you can listen to it when you find time. (You need to download and install it on your PC)

Juice is technically a “Media Aggregator,” a program that allows you to select and download audio files from anywhere on the Internet to your desktop.

Ok, where do I find a podcast (audio / video files)? Podcast.net hosts a largest collection of such podcasts under many different categories.
